Formats, algorithms and limits
Effects are real Web Audio nodes: a delay line with feedback for echo, a convolver for reverb, a waveshaper for distortion and a lowpass filter for the radio band. Pitch works by resampling the buffer, which is why a strong pitch shift also changes the clip's duration — the classic quick-shift trade-off, and the reason a helium clip sounds shorter and a giant clip slower. Output is 16-bit WAV at your device's sample rate.
Troubleshooting and honest limits
- Record in a quiet room with headphones on: monitoring through speakers re-records the effect and creates feedback.
- Render a two-second test before committing to a long take.
- Keep distortion below the halfway mark unless you want the growl — it clips quickly on loud input.
Frequently asked questions
Does the pitch slider keep the clip the same length?
No. Pitch is applied by resampling, so shifting up shortens the audio and shifting down lengthens it. A tempo-preserving pitch shifter would need a different (phase-vocoder) algorithm.
Can I use an MP3 file instead of recording?
Yes. Upload any audio your browser can decode, apply the effects and export. The export is WAV so the rendered effect is uncompressed.
Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. The microphone stream, the decoding and the effect graph all run inside the browser tab.
Why does the robot preset sound metallic?
It combines heavy distortion with a short feedback delay, which adds a ring-modulation-like harshness. Lower the distortion slider for a cleaner robotic tone.
